Maywood 3500
Arlington, VA
Renovation and addition to a contributing 1919 farm house in the Maywood Historic District. This addition comprises an approximate doubling of the existing house. This farmhouse was constructed in 1911, and is included as a contributing structure to the Maywood Historic District, a community listed on the County, State and the National registers of Historic Places. The project was designed within the HALRB design review process required for Maywood, and the effort included production of cardboard study and computer models. The house is an original four-square, a prototypical house type in the neighborhood whose basic floor plan and many of the interior details are found in other houses in Maywood.
The design program called for adding a new eating space, family room, guest room and bath on the first floor, and a new master bedroom, bathroom, and study on the second floor. The owner stated that retention of the street-front character of the house was paramount.
As with all additions in Maywood, two primary design challenges were present: 1) providing a large amount of new program area without overwhelming the original building, and 2) establishing a design language complementary to the original building, but also distinguishable as an additive piece.
